Market Report, "Germany Infrastructure Report Q2 2011", published

PRLog (Press Release) – Mar 27, 2011 – BMI View: Growth in Germany's construction sector was largely in line with our expectations in 2010. The market expanded by 1.8% in real terms during the year, just marginally below our expectation of 2.2%. Going forward, however, we anticipate that growth in the construction sector will be subdued, totalling less than 1% per year across the remainder of our core forecast period (2012 to 2015).

Our bearish scenario is predicated on the generic weakness of the German economy:

* The outlook for wider economic growth in Germany across our forecast period is subdued. We anticipate that real GDP growth will register around 2% in 2011, down from an estimate of just over 3.5% in 2010. Across the period 2012-2015, we anticipate that real economic growth will rest within a range of 1.6% to 1.8% per annum.  * The construction sector will likely underperform the wider economy, in our view. The German government is gearing up for a significant period of fiscal consolidation, as its budget deficit exceeds that stipulated by the Maastricht criteria by some margin. As such, investment in infrastructure will have to be curtailed over the medium to long term.  * The lack of public funds for infrastructure investment will compound the expected weakness in private sector construction, which in turn is a highly cyclical sector and therefore vulnerable during extended periods of low overall economic activity.

Risks to our forecasts are to both the upside and the downside. If the German economy manages to move back onto a higher growth path, then this will encourage both greater private sector construction activity and allow the government to take a less binding approach to fiscal retrenchment (tax receipts will be higher in the event of stronger growth). However, on the downside, there is the possibility that the global economy will experience a double-dip recession, a scenario that would almost certainly tip Germany's construction market back into a deep recession.

Germany's business environment remains reasonably strong this quarter and ranks in fourth place behind the UK, France and Australia. Germany is one of the stronger performers in this region; however, reduced rewards limit the potential for returns. Germany's highest rating this quarter was for Country Rewards at 81.51. Despite being above 80 this score still places it sixth among its peers for this category and below the average for developed states. Overall the country scored 69.3 for its business environment, which is a touch lower than in the previous quarter.

While we do not see a near-term challenge to political stability, President Yanukovich will face increasing discontent in 2011 as fiscal austerity measures put pressure on government spending and the Ukrainian electorate.

Ukraine's economic recovery slowed to post real GDP growth of 3.5% in Q310, in line with our view that Q210 growth of 5.9% marked the peak of the recovery. Ubisense Helps Label Manufacturer Improve Productivity

Herma was founded in 1906 and is located in Filderstadt, Germany (near Stuttgart). Each day the company sends out around 550 pallets of coated paper, film and labels to customers around the world – a process that presents a number of significant production and logistical challenges. To optimize its storage and transportation processes, Herma has introduced Ubisense's high precision RTLS technology integrated with SAP.

Every minute counts when customers are waiting to receive a shipment, especially static garbage compactor when their production process is dep waste compactor endent upon just-in-time delivery. Herma dispatches product from a central logistics warehouse, which is constantly fed with pre-configured pallets from several production lines. The operation is complex and very dynamic. With limited space and numerous pallets that all look visually very similar, everything has to run like clockwork. This is where the Ubisense precise RTLS comes into play.

Ubisense's RTLS combines ultra-wideband radio technology with a real-time software platform to create a high performance location system that can function inside buildings. At Herma, Ubisense has constructed a network of sensors around the logistics area, which receives real-time location signals transmitted at frequencies of between 6 and 8.5 GHz from battery-operated tags. The location of the tags is determined to an accuracy of 30cm with 100 percent reliability.

Because tracking individual pallets at jenn air trash compactor Herma proved impractical, Ubisense has fitted tags to the forklift trucks that transport goods from the production department to the shipment area and onto lorries. The pallets are scanned and the exact set-down location in the logistics area is recorded by Ubisense software, which combines the position with the pallet identification number using middleware running under SAP. Forklift operators use a small terminal mounted in their vehicle to view the exact position of pallets and retrieve them for shipment. With the forklifts under continuous surveillance, errors and mix-ups are effectively eliminated. The system can even detect when a forklift is about to pick up the incorrect pallet and alerts the driver. Shipment docks are also monitored and a warning given if a pallet is driven onto an incorrect lorry.

The investment has paid for itself according to Frank Baude, Head of Customs and Logistics at Herma: "The Ubisense system has enabled us to cope with an increase in shipments using our existing capacity and has helped us to work far more efficiently. The time required to find goods has decreased and there are practically no delivery errors – saving us money and improving our customer satisfaction levels. You can't expect more than that!"
